Tax preparation is more than entering numbers into tax software. A properly prepared return requires understanding how income, deductions, investments, business activity, and other financial information fit together—and recognizing when something deserves a closer look.

Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates provides professional tax preparation services for individuals and businesses in Boca Raton and throughout Florida. From individual tax returns to business returns and more involved tax situations, our team takes the time to understand the complete picture before your return is filed.

Every client’s circumstances are different. Whether you have multiple sources of income, own a business, have rental properties or investments, or simply want the confidence of having an experienced CPA firm prepare your return, we provide the personal attention and professional oversight your tax situation deserves.

Tax Preparation for Individuals and Businesses

Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates prepares federal and state tax returns for individuals, business owners, and businesses with a wide range of tax situations. The firm handles a wide range of returns, including those involving multiple income sources, investments, rental properties, self-employment, or business activity. We also prepare tax returns for estates and trusts, gift tax returns, and returns for nonprofit organizations.

Individual Tax Preparation

Your tax return should reflect more than the forms that arrive in your mailbox each year. Changes in income, investments, property ownership, self-employment, retirement, and family circumstances can all affect how your return should be prepared.

We prepare individual income tax returns for a wide range of tax situations, including investments, rental properties, business or self-employment income, multiple sources of income, and other circumstances requiring additional analysis.

Business Tax Preparation

Business tax preparation requires accurate financial information as well as an understanding of the tax requirements that apply to the business and its entity structure. We prepare tax returns for sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLCs, S corporations, C corporations, and other business entities.

If your bookkeeping isn’t completely up to date when it’s time to prepare the return, we can also help get your financial records in order. Our accounting services and bookkeeping services can address the work that needs to be completed before the tax return can be accurately prepared.

What to Expect When We Prepare Your Tax Return

We want the tax preparation process to be straightforward from the beginning. Whether you are a new client or have worked with our firm for years, our team will let you know what information is needed and guide you through the process.

Tell Us What You Need

Start by calling our office or completing the contact form on our website. We’ll learn a little about your tax situation, answer your initial questions, and determine the best next step. If your situation would benefit from a conversation with Jeff, we can schedule a complimentary consultation.

Provide Your Tax Information

New clients are typically asked to provide a copy of their prior-year tax return along with the documents needed to prepare the current return. Existing clients receive a detailed tax organizer each year to help gather the information we need. Documents can be provided electronically, and clients who prefer to bring their paperwork to our Boca Raton office can do that as well.

We Prepare and Review Your Return

Our tax professionals prepare the return and review the information provided, following up when additional information or clarification is needed. New-client tax returns receive a final review by Jeff before they are sent to the client. That review is an important part of our process. Tax preparation isn’t simply about entering the documents you provide; it’s also about looking at the completed return and making sure the information makes sense in the context of your overall tax situation.

Review, Sign and File

Once your return is complete, we’ll send it to you for review. If you have questions or want to discuss something on the return, our team is available to go over it with you. Once you’ve reviewed and signed the required authorization, we’ll electronically file the return on your behalf.

Documents and Information for Tax Preparation

The documents and information required to prepare your tax return will depend on your individual or business situation. The following are some of the items that can help us get started.

Not sure what applies to you? You don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Existing clients receive a detailed tax organizer each year, and our team can help new clients determine what information and documents are needed for their return.

Income and Tax Documents

Provide the tax forms you receive for the year, such as W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, brokerage statements, retirement income statements, and other documents reporting income or tax-related activity.

Business or Self-Employment Records

If you own a business or are self-employed, we’ll need information about your income and deductible business expenses. Depending on how your records are maintained, this may include financial statements, bookkeeping records, or a summary of income and expenses. If your bookkeeping needs to be brought up to date before the return can be prepared, our firm can help with that as well.

Information About Changes During the Year

Let us know about significant changes that could affect your tax return, such as a marriage or divorce, a new dependent, the purchase or sale of property, starting or selling a business, retirement, or other major financial changes.

Your Prior-Year Tax Return

If you are a new client, providing your most recent tax return gives us important background about your tax situation and helps us identify items that may need to be addressed in the current year.

Why Work with a CPA for Tax Preparation?

Tax software can help organize information and complete tax forms, but it relies on the information you enter and the questions you know to ask. Working with a CPA adds professional judgment to the tax preparation process.

At Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates, we look beyond individual forms to understand how the different pieces of your tax situation fit together. That can be especially valuable when your return involves a business, self-employment, investments, rental property, multiple sources of income, or significant changes from one year to the next.

More Than Data Entry

Preparing an accurate tax return isn’t simply a matter of transferring numbers from tax documents onto forms. Information sometimes raises additional questions, appears inconsistent with other records, or has tax implications that aren’t immediately obvious.

Our team reviews the information you provide and follows up when something needs clarification rather than simply assuming the numbers tell the entire story.

CPA Oversight

Your return benefits from the experience and professional judgment of a CPA firm. For new clients of Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates, Jeff performs the final review before the completed return is sent to the client.

A Resource When You Have Questions

Tax questions don’t always end when the return is prepared. We explain items on the completed return when clients have questions and can help with estimated tax payments and other tax matters that arise during the year.

If more proactive tax guidance is needed, our Tax Planning Services focus on looking ahead and identifying planning opportunities before it’s time to prepare the next return.

Amended Tax Returns

Sometimes a tax return needs to be corrected after it has already been filed. You may receive a late K-1 or brokerage statement, discover that income or business activity was omitted, or realize that a dependent, deduction, credit, or other information was left off the original return.

An amended return isn’t automatically necessary every time something changes. Our team can review the situation, determine the tax impact, and advise whether filing an amended return is appropriate. If you have tax returns from previous years that were never filed, rather than a previously filed return that needs to be corrected, visit our Unfiled Tax Returns page for information about getting caught up.

Extensions and Estimated Tax Payments

If you need additional time to complete your tax return, we can prepare and file an extension on your behalf. An extension gives you more time to file your return, but it does not extend the deadline for paying taxes that are due.

When possible, our team can help determine an appropriate estimated tax payment based on the information available. For established clients, that may include reviewing prior-year information and what we know about the current tax situation when all of the documents needed to complete the return have not yet been received. This can help reduce the risk of unnecessary penalties and interest while allowing additional time to complete the return.

We also assist clients who are required to make estimated tax payments during the year and can help determine the appropriate amounts based on their tax situation.

How Much Does Tax Preparation Cost?

The cost of professional tax preparation depends on the amount of work involved in preparing and reviewing the return. An individual return with fewer forms and less complexity will generally require less time than a return involving a business, multiple rental properties, investments, numerous tax documents, or records that need additional review.

At Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates, tax preparation fees are based primarily on the time required to complete the work. Because two returns that may initially sound similar can require very different amounts of preparation and review, we prefer to understand your tax situation before estimating the work involved.

If you’re considering becoming a client, contact our office and tell us a little about your tax situation. We’ll ask a few questions about the return and the services you need so you have a better understanding of what to expect before getting started.

Tax Preparation vs. Tax Planning

Tax preparation and tax planning serve different purposes. Tax preparation looks at what has already happened; tax planning looks ahead.

Tax preparation focuses on accurately reporting your income, deductions, credits, and other financial activity for a completed tax year. Tax planning is proactive. It considers decisions you can make before the year ends—or before a significant financial event occurs—that may affect your future tax liability.

Many clients benefit from both. Information identified while preparing a tax return may reveal opportunities to plan differently for the year ahead, particularly for business owners, self-employed individuals, investors, and others whose financial circumstances can change throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tax Preparation

No. Much of the tax preparation process can be handled remotely, including providing documents, reviewing your completed return, signing the required authorization, and electronic filing. If you prefer to bring documents to the office, you can do that as well.

Yes. Jeffrey D. Ressler, CPA & Associates prepares both individual and business tax returns. This can be especially helpful for business owners whose business activity affects their personal tax return, since both can be handled by the same CPA firm. The firm prepares business returns for a range of entity structures.

If your business records need to be brought up to date before your tax return can be prepared, we can help. Our firm provides bookkeeping services and can complete the necessary accounting work before preparing the return.

Yes. If a previously filed return contains incomplete or incorrect information, we can review what changed and determine whether an amended return should be filed. Reasons may include a tax document received after filing, omitted income or business activity, or other information that wasn’t included on the original return.

An unfiled return is different from an amended return. If you have one or more prior years that were never filed, our firm can help you get caught up. Visit our Unfiled Tax Returns page to learn more.

Yes. We prepare and file tax extensions when additional time is needed to complete a return. Keep in mind that an extension provides additional time to file, not additional time to pay taxes that are due. When appropriate, we can also help determine an estimated payment based on the information available.

Tax preparation fees are based primarily on the time required to prepare and review the return. Factors such as business activity, rental properties, investments, the number of tax documents, and the condition of the underlying records can affect the amount of work involved. Because every tax situation is different, we prefer to learn about your return before estimating the work required.
